When my wife, son, and I flew back from San Francisco yesterday, the security scanners detected a small Swiss Army knife in my wife's purse. Shows the system works, right?
Not so much. She cannot remember when she put the knife in her purse, but it was years ago and has therefore gone through security undetected on numerous occassions.

It's a male/female thing. Swiss army knives have a similar profile to lipstick tubes on the scanners, so yes, you can leave them in your purse for years and they seldom get questioned. Take it out of your wife's purse and put it in your briefcase and it will get confiscated much more quickly.
I remember when this airport inspection stuff started eons ago....
We were at a conference in Louisville, Kentucky and there were not that many flights out the afternoon it broke up.
So most of the 2000 people that had been at the conference were in the line.
The conference gave "speaker gifts" to everybody that read a paper, which typically included most of us at the week long conference since board and committee meetings counted as "papers read".
The security person caught one of the gifts -- a letter opener that conference, and realized that she had been looking at a lot of them.
So we all had to go through the line again and we had the choice of surrendering the contraband, or taking it back to the front to get put it in checked luggage.
I've often wondered if the "sanitized the planes after they got everybody back off.
(I and quite a few of us that had not spoken at the end of the conference had already put ours in our checked luggage.)
One of the brighter folk got a box or something for each flight and everybody on a given flight put their letter openers in the box for their flight, to be reclaimed at destination.
Conference management was spoken-to *ah3em* sharply in a later conversation.

I agree, there must be a reasonable assurance in internal controls, therefore i think the full body scan is a great idea! However, it may make some people that it violates there privacy.
This airport security fraud is just another way for big government to infringe on our privacy and control our lives. The Constitution (supposedly) guarantees our right to bear arms. If Americans had been "allowed" to open carry on airplanes, 9/11 would have never happened. Abdhul Boxcutter would have met with Mr. Smith and Wesson!
A few years ago I saw a man who strangely resembled the terrorist in the movie true lies. He pulled a cart filled with suitcases over to the doorway and took each of 13 off the cart and put it on another, deliberately leaving one by the door.
I obeyed the refrain from the P.A. to report anyone leaving a bag to the TSA. And, I have to say the TSA did a very thorough investigation - OF ME!
When they were done, I went into the waiting area but just as I was going I was able to see that the bag was still there undisturbed. Fortunately, no boom. I guess he just didn't want the bag. But, you get the point.
Just saw you on C-Span. Good job.
last week our group held a similar discussion on this topic and you point out something we haven't covered yet, thanks.

Dr. Miron,
Thank you for supporting freedom and liberty. I am an economics student at a small school in Utah and am always glad to see libertarian principles spoken of in academia! Luckily I have been able to sneak cheese back from Mexico through customs so I feel that I am getting away with something.

First off I want to say wonderful blog! I had a quick question which I'd like to ask if you don't mind.
I was interested to find out how you center yourself and clear your mind prior to writing.
I've had trouble clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out there. I do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or hints? Thank you!
