My Run-In with the Law

While driving last night from Wellesley to Charlottesville, I was stopped for not having a working light over the rear license plate.

My wife said, "It makes sense to have such a rule; otherwise police could not read your license (at night)."

My response was, "Why do the police need to read my license plate (at night or otherwise)?  Why require license plates at all?"

The answer is presumably something like, "It helps police solve crimes."

But how many?  Is it worth the cost of all those license plates?

just the knowledge that you are "identifiable" might "nudge" people into following more laws than they otherwise would. This benefit alone could justify the very small cost of having a license plate.

another easier way to look at the problem - given that the benefits might be difficult to calculate, even in a "back of the envelope" case, is to just look at the costs. My sense is that a license plate costs around $50. Given all the (admittedly) proposed benefits, they occur over the life of the car, many years. The smaller the cost, the easier it is to pass the cost/ benefit test.

The "it helps police solve crimes" line presupposes that all actions currently labeled "crimes" are worthy of being called such, and that they justify the attention they get from the government as a result.

If we rule out "crimes" having to do with drugs, moderate amounts of alcohol, prostitution, gambling, licensure, and, say, migrant labor, my guess is that the cost/benefit analysis would no longer hold up. Basically, it wouldn't cover much more than violent crime, theft, and hit-and-run traffic accidents.

The cost of the license plate requirement is not the physical cost of the plate, or even the associated registration and inspection fees.

The cost is loss of freedom and loss of privacy.

America is not a Big Brother society. We do not require citizens to wear ID badges and we should not require it for cars either.

What about the VIN? And red-light/speeding cameras?

While in cars people are mostly anonymous. There aren't many differences between different blue Civics, for example. Or even between blue Civics and blue Accords.

With the way many people drive when they can be identified easily, I'm glad we aren't taking it further.
