Yesterday I signed up my son up for driver's ed classes. Under a recent revision of the laws in Massachusetts, parents must also attend two hours of classes, so I get to go as well.
Does this requirement accomplish anything? Hard to see how. Just two hours down the drain.

Yes. It will likely accomplish the State's goal of reducing the total number of teenage drivers on the road both in terms of the raw number of teenagers licensed to drive and also in the number of teenagers permitted to use a family car during other than daylight hours.
It will also likely be a boon to criminal defense attorneys, in as much as teenagers, being what they are, will likely drive anyway even though unlicensed.
There is always a flip side to nanny-state legislation which is to increase the incidence of illegal conduct, that further clogs the already overburdened judicial system.
Yes. Behavioral studies show that merely thinking about "the rules" can increase adherence to them. For example, asking people to write the ten commandments before taking a test reduces the rate at which they cheat. Similarly, forcing parents to take a two hour driving course makes them think about the rules of the road, and even if they don't actually learn anything it may improve their driving.
And Libertarian Advocate is correct in saying it will mean fewer kids driving fewer miles, which is a plus in my book.
